Innovation

Demlane has shown innovation within the shellfish industry by distributing the fresh product bagged and iced in polystyrene boxes. This policy has proven benefits for the customer, notably:

  • A fresher, more stable product with a longer shelf life.
  • Reduced risk of outside contamination and physical damage.
  • Boxes ensure easier handling at customer's premises.
  • Refrigerated transport from farm to customer retains this harvest quality.

A rigorous quality control procedure and regular laboratory analysis of the mussels is undertaken to ensure product safety and confidence for the customer at all times. Demlane provides an in-house sales operation, which ensures the customer enjoys a direct link with the farm allowing us to be more responsive to the customer's requirements.

Demlane is responding to customer needs and is exploring ways in which the product can be packed in drip free packaging (MAP). The challenge is to ensure the taste and quality are the same without reducing the shelf life.

Contact should be made with either our sales office or farm to discuss how Demlane can meet your requirements for a quality product delivered direct from the farm to your premises.

We have also shown innovation within the industry with the recent acquisition of a smokehouse which has been exclusively dedicated to the task of oak-smoking mussels. As part of the development of this new product, Isle of Shuna has employed food technology and shellfish expert Rod Knutton to refine and perfect the smoking process and develop the product into a premium one ready for the retail and trade market.
