Demlane Mussels

Demlane mussels

The finest quality mussels in the world… Under the direction of its parent company Isle of Shuna plc, Demlane – a name synonymous with the highest-quality Scottish mussels – has introduced a new mussel product.

It’s no secret that Shetland mussels are the finest that can be sourced: these rope-grown shellfish feed themselves better in the fresh, clean plankton-rich waters of the gulf stream, and so grow into healthier, fuller-flavoured mussels. Demlane is one of the largest producers and suppliers of rope grown mussels (mytilus edulis) in Scotland. Demlane is a well-established business, which has built a reputation for superb quality and service. The cool, clear waters of the Shetland Islands, located off the North of Scotland coastline in the flow of the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf Stream) creates a favourable location which provides ideal growing conditions and an abundant food supply for the shellfish.

Isle of Shuna oak-smoked mussels

Oak-smoked Mussels

It’s no secret that rope-grown Demlane mussels cultivated in fresh, clean Shetland waters warmed by the Gulf Stream are the finest that can be sourced. Only this high-grade produce is used for the traditional smoking process using oak wood – the ‘Queen of smoking woods’.

Lightly smoked in their shells at source in order to maximise freshness and virtually eliminate the possibility of contamination, our oak-smoked mussels have a subtle yet very distinctive flavour. Isle of Shuna employed the expertise of shellfish expert Rod Knutton to refine, indeed perfect the smoking process, which has created a truly premium retail product. Our smoked mussel line provides a great opportunity to capture a new market by virtue of the unique taste and the lengthened shelf life that smoking affords. These mussels are very versatile and are sure to inspire culinary creativity!

Isle of Shuna mussels

Isle of Shuna mussels are rope grown on the West Coast of Scotland and harvested from July each year and from the remote Western Isles where they are harvested from September. The more Southerly and Westerly latitude brings a different season and a lighter flavoured mussel to the market. In every other respect the product meets the same exacting standards as the Demlane product.
